Art in Nature is a summer retreat for children ages 9 – 12 and teens 13-17 that combines art process, Nature exploration, storytelling and creative movement into a unique experience of beauty and self-discovery.
Art in Nature is designed to serve as a catalyst for creativity. Discovering one’s ability to communicate visually represents an important facet in a child’s development. We encourage our students to experience the excitement of creative decision-making, to take interpretive risks and to dive deep into the vast pool of imagination.
In this retreat students will:
• Expand their visual vocabulary
• Discover innovative drawing and painting techniques in a variety of media
• Explore an intuitive approach to color
• Learn basics of landscape and figure drawing
• Create sculptures from natural materials
• Use visual contemplation and imagination as inspiration
• Work collaboratively on an art project
JoyArt’s mountainside sanctuary as well as the spacious indoor and outdoor studios will provide an enchanted setting for our creative adventure that unites different disciplines through a subtle single focus. Our program, however playful, is a genuine exploration of different facets of child’s personality, their talents and strengths.
Art in Nature teen program offers an added layer of complexity by putting the art process in the context of aesthetics, philosophy and art history with a focus on developing a personal vision and style. Special consideration is given to students who are interested in deepening their art practice while preparing a portfolio for college entry.
Our teachers strike a careful balance between spontaneous experimentation and a lifetime of experience in a chosen field while guiding children in a serious inquiry into the nature of art and aesthetics. The retreat culminates in a multi-dimentional presentation of the creative work done during the week.
Program Goals
• To awaken each participant to their own inherent creative potential
• To explore the expression of this potential through artistic process
• To teach important skills that support the artistic process and allow it to unfold
• To focus on creativity as an engine of self – discovery and transformation
All students must bring a hat, insect repellant, bag lunch, water and a mid-morning snack. All art supplies are included.
